Caballo Lake: Quiet Water and Wintering Eagles
Twenty minutes south of Truth or Consequences, Caballo Lake trades crowds for calm water, great fishing, and one of the best eagle-watching spots in the state.
If Elephant Butte is Sierra County's headline lake, Caballo is the one locals go to when they want quiet. Set beneath the Caballo Mountains just south of Truth or Consequences, it's smaller, calmer, and far less busy — which is exactly the appeal.
Fishing is the main draw. Caballo holds white bass, largemouth, walleye, catfish, and crappie, and the shoreline access is generous enough that you don't need a boat to have a good day. Spring white bass runs bring anglers from across the state, and the early-morning stillness on this lake is something Elephant Butte rarely offers.
In winter, Caballo becomes one of New Mexico's better bald eagle viewing areas. Birds gather along the shoreline and in the cottonwoods below the dam from roughly November through February. Bring binoculars, get there early, and stay in the car — you'll see more that way.
Caballo Lake State Park and neighboring Percha Dam State Park cover both sides of the river here, with campgrounds, picnic areas, and easy river access. Percha Dam in particular is a well-known birding site, with a dense bosque that draws a remarkable variety of species for its size.
From most of our properties, Caballo is a twenty to thirty minute drive — close enough for a morning of fishing and back in time for an afternoon soak in town.
