Visiting Spaceport America from Truth or Consequences

The world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport sits in the desert just east of town. Here's how to see it — and why the drive is half the fun.

It still surprises people that the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport is in Sierra County, New Mexico. Spaceport America occupies a stretch of high desert between Truth or Consequences and the San Andres Mountains, chosen for its elevation, its empty airspace, and its famously clear weather.

The architecture alone justifies the trip. The Gateway to Space terminal is a low, curved structure that seems to rise out of the desert floor, designed to disappear into the landscape from a distance. It serves as the operating base for Virgin Galactic's human spaceflight program and hosts a range of aerospace tenants running launches and tests.

Public access is by organized tour, and availability changes depending on operations at the facility. Tours generally depart from Truth or Consequences, which makes staying in town the practical choice. Check the Spaceport America website for current tour offerings and book well ahead — dates fill up, particularly around launch activity.

The drive out is genuinely part of the experience: wide-open Jornada del Muerto desert, big skies, and almost no traffic. Bring water, a full tank, and a camera. On the way back, the same darkness that makes this a good place to launch rockets makes it a spectacular place to look up. Pull over somewhere safe, turn off the headlights, and give your eyes ten minutes.
